The international Virgin Mobile businesses each act as independent entities, usually in a partnership between Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group and an existing phone company. Virgin Group provides the brand, and the phone company operates the network infrastructure. Virgin Mobile was the UK's first mobile virtual network operator when it launched in the United Kingdom in 1999.[1] It does not maintain its own network but instead contracts to use the existing network(s) of other providers. In Australia, Virgin Mobile operates on the Optus network.[4] In Canada, it uses the Bell Mobility network.[5] In France, it uses Orange SA.[6] Virgin Mobile South Africa uses the Cell C network for coverage across South Africa. In India, it uses the network of Tata Indicom. These networks use two different mobile telephony standards, GSM and CDMA. GSM is used in the UK, South Africa, Australia, France and Canada. CDMA, for phones with R-UIM cards, and GSM, for phones with SIM cards, are used in the US, and India (Virgin has access to Bell Canada's CDMA and HSPA+ networks.) GSM was launched in India recently. In all countries, Virgin Mobile offers prepaid mobile phone pay-as-you-go service. In the UK, US, Canada, Australia and South Africa, Virgin Mobile also offers a post-paid option to approved customers. Already very common in the UK at the time of Virgin Mobile's launch, prepaid wireless service was a very small part of the US wireless market. Nevertheless, competitive pricing, and a "no-frills" approach ensured a small but significant market share. In June 2009, Virgin Mobile announced and started a pay-as-you go mobile data program called Broadband2Go in the United States, usingNovatel Wireless hardware, and available exclusively through the Best Buy chain of stores originally, but now available at other retailers including RadioShack in the United States and The Source in Canada. It uses a small USB modem for internet connectivity.[7][8][9] [edit]Virgin Mobile worldwide [edit]Virgin Mobile Canada This section does not cite any references or sources. Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged andremoved. (November 2008) Virgin Mobile Canada experienced substantial growth in 2008, launching approximately 60 Virgin Mini Stores (VMS) across the country. VMS are kiosks usually located in shopping malls that especially target the 18–35 year old demographic.[10] For four years running, Virgin Mobile Canada has received J.D. Power and Associates' annual award for Highest Customer Satisfaction for Prepaid Wireless. Post-paid plans were introduced to Virgin Canada in February 2008. Bell Mobility acquired Virgin Mobile Canada in May 2009 for CAN$142 million.[11] Since early 2010, Virgin Mobile Canada launched the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 post-paid service in Virgin Mobile Retail Stores and online, all around Canada.[12] Virgin Mobile became the fifth brand offering the iPhone in Canada, after Fido, Rogers Wireless, Telus and Bell Mobility. [edit]Virgin Mobile India On March 1, 2008, Virgin launched the Mobile brand in India through a franchise arrangement with Tata Teleservices.[12] This is Virgin’s seventh launch globally and its largest.[13] However on March 29, 2008, the Department of Telecom (DoT) cleared the deal after clarification from Tata Teleservices indicated that Virgin had not entered India as an MVNO.[14] [edit]Virgin Mobile Qatar Virgin Mobile Qatar is a brand licensing partnership agreement between Virgin Group and Qatar Telecom (as Qtel Group). The new brand was launched 13 May 2010[15] over the network of Qatar Telecom (Qtel).[12] Virgin claims to be Qatar’s first youth-oriented mobile brand, and offers pre-paid-only, simplified all-day tariff plans (with no distinction between peak and off-peak), with a 180-day airtime validity — which it says is the longest available in the country. Local calls are charged at QAR0.55 (USD0.15) per minute for the first five minutes used in each day, and QAR0.30 per minute after that, whilst mobile internet access costs QAR1 per 1MB. Richard Branson, chairman of UK-based Virgin Group, said: "Virgin Mobile [has] more than 15 million customers around the world ... I am proud to have partnered with Qtel to make Virgin Mobile Qatar our first mobile launch in the Middle East." The service is the eighth Virgin Mobile branded operation in the world, following on from launches in the UK, Australia, the US, Canada, France, South Africa and India. Branson added that Virgin Group is mulling further partnerships with Qtel, which has a group presence in 17 countries. Virgin Mobile Qatar was being widely mistaken to be the third mobile network operator (MNO) in Qatar, in the form of a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), essentially a brand as reseller. It has been confirmed by the Qtel and ictQatar, the local telecommunications authority reiterating that its only a branding agreement.[16] [edit]Virgin Mobile Singapore Virgin Singapore was launched in October 2001 as a joint venture with Singtel. The operations were closed down by October 2002 after failing to attract a significant number of customers.[17] Failure of the joint venture was attributed to a saturated mobile market and Virgin Mobile's positioning as a "premium" brand.[18] [edit]Virgin Mobile USA On July 28, 2009, Sprint agreed to pay $483 million to purchase Virgin Mobile USA. The Federal Trade Commission later gave the go-ahead on the acquisition.[19] Virgin Mobile USA was originally conceived as a joint venture between Virgin Group and Sprint, and uses Sprint's cellular bandwidth in the United States. Sprint retained the Virgin Mobile name after the deal closed. [edit]Awards During July 2008 in the UK Virgin Mobile was awarded Shop Idol 2008 by Mobile magazine after Jason Jones who was an employee of Virgin Mobile had beaten stiff competition from other sales advisors from all the other networks throughout the UK. In February 1999, Topp received a major infusion of capital from Teléfonos de México or Telmex (NYSE: TMX), Mexico's largest telephone company. TelMex paid $57.5 million for a 55 percent controlling interest in the company. In 2000, Telmex spun off their mobile unit, creating América Móvil, of which Topp Telecom became a subsidiary. In November 2000, Topp Telecom Inc. changed its name to TracFone Wireless Inc.[2] [edit]Service TracFone provides five brands of service: TracFone, NET10, Safelink Wireless, Straight Talk, and Senior Value Cellphone. These brands differ not only in their logos and prepaid minute rates but their underlying networks: [edit]TracFone TracFone service is limited to TracFone-branded handsets (all TracFone handsets are pre-programmed by the manufacturer; therefore, the handset is locked including its latest GSM models). Other GSM handsets will not accept TracFone SIM cards, even if unlocked. Additionally, on most handsets, some features like USB and Bluetooth have been modified by the manufacturer to prevent direct transfer of user files. Photos can be downloaded from and uploaded to phones via MMS only, and custom ringtones must be purchased from TracFone. The TracFone-branded service allows a customer to buy airtime units to use on selected digital phones by Kyocera, LG, Motorola, andSamsung. Which handset the user purchases determines what type of network the service uses. Tracfone minutes (known as "units") are purchased in blocks that vary in price with the quantity of minutes being purchased. Text messages and mobile web access are measured in fractions of units: sending or receiving a text message deducts 0.3 units from the user's account (earlier TracFone models deducted 0.5 units from the user's account to send or receive a text message); each minute of mobile Web access deducts 0.5 units, rounded up to the next whole minute. Though earlier TracFone models charged double (2.0 units per minute) for roamingoutside the user's home phone area, the current phones all offer the "single rate" plan, which charges the same 1.0 unit-per-minute rate regardless of location. Tracfones have expiration dates; purchasing more airtime typically adds 90 days of service, with a 365-day extension package available. [edit]Net10 Main article: Net10 NET10 is a related offering, using GSM phones which support voicemail and text messaging at a minimum. Some models also offer Bluetooth, camera, handsfree speaker, qwerty keyboard, and wireless web.[3] The "10" in NET10 signifies that each voice minute costs ten cents (three or five cents for text messages), with no additional fees. NET10's slogan is No Bills, No Contracts, No Evil. Both airtime cards and auto-pay plans called "Easy Minutes" are available. Time can be added using the phone itself ("Rapid Refill"), or at the company's website. Minutes from one month carry over to the next, as long as service remains active. NET10 offers business plans and international calling, and number portability is advertised on their site as being available. [edit]Net10 Unlimited Net10 now offers a flat rate option [4]. The phones used to be available at Target's brick and mortar stores only, but not target.com and operated only on the T-Mobile Network. However in late Sept. 2010, Net10 unveiled new Unlimited plans available both on their website and multiple retailers. These new plans operate the same as the pay as you go minutes, in that you can add them from a card to any Net10 handset. [edit]SafeLink SafeLink Wireless provides a free cell phone and a limited number of voice minutes each month for low-income-eligible families (one per family) who do not use Lifeline services offered by any other phone or wireless company. It is funded through the Universal Service Fund that almost every US taxpayer contributes to via their existing land-line and wireless service provider, but is only operational in a limited number of states.[5][6] It is similar to the Lifeline and LinkUp government subsidized service for home telephones.[7] Applications for service may be done via their web page, or by having them fax or mail an application form. No choice of phone handset is provided by the application process. Additional minutes over the free monthly benefit may be purchased. [edit]Straight Talk Straight Talk is one of TracFone's newest brands. The Straight Talk brand offers five different value-based 30-day rate plans: a $30 limited plan, and a $45 Unlimited text, web and minutes plan, a $135 three-month Unlimited plan, a $270 six-month Unlimited plan, and a $540 one year Unlimited plan. Straight Talk is a Mobile Virtual Network operator (MVNO) offering both CDMA and GSM support. The CDMA side of the network uses Verizon's CDMA 1xRTT wireless network, which was introduced in 2001 and is said to deliver between 40 and 60 kb/s to customers[8], while the GSM side makes use of either T-Mobile's or AT&T's GSM networks. Fourteen phones are available for use with Straight Talk: the LG 100C, LG 200C, LG 220C, LG 290C, LG 420G, LG 620G, Motorola W385, Motorola RAZR V3A, Samsung R451C, Samsung T401G, Samsung R355C, Samsung Finesse R810C, Nokia E71, and Nokia Surge (6790). There are exceptions to 1xRTT-only service. The Finesse R810C, an EV-DO-capable handset, performs at higher speeds where such coverage is available. The Nokia E71 and Nokia Surge (6790) are the first smartphones to be offered by Straight Talk. They offer 3G coverage through AT&T. Users of these phones are required to purchase the $45/30 day Unlimited plan. All other phones can be use with either the $45 Unlimited plan or the $30 - 1000 minutes, 1000 texts and 30MB "All You Need" plan. All plans provide service for a period of 30 days. Straight Talk is currently exclusive to Wal-Mart stores because of a joint-venture program between the two companies.[9] [edit]Senior Value Cellphone TracFone recently introduced a new service called Senior Value Cellphone, a cell phone brand aimed towards senior citizens. Senior Value Cellphone uses the same rate plans, customer support, and contact information as TracFone differing only in phone selection. There are two options for adding airtime: buying the $7 per month plan, or adding Tracfone airtime cards. There are two phone options: the LG 220C and the Samsung T-155G. [edit]International Long Distance In keeping with its marketing to immigrant communities,[citation needed] TracFone provides international calling options to all its customers. A toll-free number in the US is dialed to make phone calls to at least some telephones (not including cellphones) in over fifty countries. The International Neighbors plan allows TracFone customers to obtain up to three local telephone numbers in any of several Canadian or Mexican cities. These are forwarded to the TracFone customer in the United States at the standard rates. Virgin Mobile is a brand used by many mobile phone service providers based in the United Kingdom and operating in Australia, Canada, France, India, Qatar, South Africa and the United States, and briefly in Singapore.

[edit]Global network
In the UK, Virgin Mobile uses the Everything Everywhere network.[2] In the USA, Sprint Nextel is the network.[3] There is no roaming to other networks in the United States.
It uses a small USB modem for internet connectivity.[7][8][9]

Please help improve this article by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged andremoved. (November 2008)
Virgin Mobile Canada experienced substantial growth in 2008, launching approximately 60 Virgin Mini Stores (VMS) across the country. VMS are kiosks usually located in shopping malls that especially target the 18–35 year old demographic.[10]
For four years running, Virgin Mobile Canada has received J.D. Power and Associates' annual award for Highest Customer Satisfaction for Prepaid Wireless. Post-paid plans were introduced to Virgin Canada in February 2008.
Bell Mobility acquired Virgin Mobile Canada in May 2009 for CAN$142 million.[11]
Since early 2010, Virgin Mobile Canada launched the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 post-paid service in Virgin Mobile Retail Stores and online, all around Canada.[12] Virgin Mobile became the fifth brand offering the iPhone in Canada, after Fido, Rogers Wireless, Telus and Bell Mobility.
[edit]Virgin Mobile India
On March 1, 2008, Virgin launched the Mobile brand in India through a franchise arrangement with Tata Teleservices.[12] This is Virgin’s seventh launch globally and its largest.[13] However on March 29, 2008, the Department of Telecom (DoT) cleared the deal after clarification from Tata Teleservices indicated that Virgin had not entered India as an MVNO.[14]
[edit]Virgin Mobile Qatar
Virgin Mobile Qatar is a brand licensing partnership agreement between Virgin Group and Qatar Telecom (as Qtel Group).
It has been confirmed by the Qtel and ictQatar, the local telecommunications authority reiterating that its only a branding agreement.[16]
[edit]Virgin Mobile Singapore
Virgin Singapore was launched in October 2001 as a joint venture with Singtel. The operations were closed down by October 2002 after failing to attract a significant number of customers.[17]
Failure of the joint venture was attributed to a saturated mobile market and Virgin Mobile's positioning as a "premium" brand.[18]
[edit]Virgin Mobile USA
On July 28, 2009, Sprint agreed to pay $483 million to purchase Virgin Mobile USA.
[edit]Awards
During July 2008 in the UK Virgin Mobile was awarded Shop Idol 2008 by Mobile magazine after Jason Jones who was an employee of Virgin Mobile had beaten stiff competition from other sales advisors from all the other networks throughout the UK.

[edit]History
TracFone was established in 1996 as Topp Telecom Inc., a prepaid cell phone company, in Miami, Florida.
In November 2000, Topp Telecom Inc. changed its name to TracFone Wireless Inc.[2]
[edit]Service
TracFone provides five brands of service: TracFone, NET10, Safelink Wireless, Straight Talk, and Senior Value Cellphone. These brands differ not only in their logos and prepaid minute rates but their underlying networks:
[edit]TracFone
TracFone service is limited to TracFone-branded handsets (all TracFone handsets are pre-programmed by the manufacturer; therefore, the handset is locked including its latest GSM models).
[edit]Net10
Main article: Net10
NET10 is a related offering, using GSM phones which support voicemail and text messaging at a minimum.
[edit]Net10 Unlimited
Net10 now offers a flat rate option [4].
[edit]SafeLink
SafeLink Wireless provides a free cell phone and a limited number of voice minutes each month for low-income-eligible families (one per family) who do not use Lifeline services offered by any other phone or wireless company.
[edit]Straight Talk
Straight Talk is one of TracFone's newest brands.
Straight Talk is currently exclusive to Wal-Mart stores because of a joint-venture program between the two companies.[9]
[edit]Senior Value Cellphone
TracFone recently introduced a new service called Senior Value Cellphone, a cell phone brand aimed towards senior citizens.
[edit]International Long Distance
In keeping with its marketing to immigrant communities,[citation needed] TracFone provides international calling options to all its customers.

AT&T Wireless
T-Mobile
Claro (Puerto Rico only)
For CDMA models:[citation needed]
Verizon Wireless
US Cellular
On TracFones with SIM cards, the carrier can be identified in the same manner as any other SIM-based phone, by interpreting the SIM number.[citation needed] On T-Mobile phones, the first line of the SIM number will end in "SIMT5", on AT&T/Cingular, the first line will end in "SIMC4", and on Claro, the first line will end with "SIMCL7".[citation needed]
